Cramming anagrams
Özcan Türkmen, a German-born software engineer and art critic living in Turkey, recently published this solution for the unsolved 340-character cipher:
You can click the text above to read Türkmen’s article about how he came up with the solution. You can also read a Turkish-language article reporting on his solution.
Unfortunately, this solution suffers from the overuse of anagrams, which permit too many alternative solutions. With so many alternative solutions, we can’t determine which solution is correct, without stronger evidence.
To illustrate this weakness, consider the plaintext “AORDLIDKNMSFCIN” which appears in his solution. This stream of plaintext occurs when Türkmen applies his substitution key to the cipher text, which Türkmen re-arranges to form the phrase “LRD OF SIC MANKIND”. While this phrase seems vaguely Zodiac-like, look at all the other words that can also be made from the very same letters:

Even after leaving out all the shorter words (less than five letters long), there are 420 words to draw from. You can create all sorts of stories with so many words to choose from. How can we possibly know for sure which words might be the ones Zodiac intentionally selected? And that chunk of plaintext is just one of many places in which Türkmen arbitrarily re-arranged. Many thousands of additional words are possible if you re-arrange the sections in which Türkmen allowed anagramming.
Türkmen’s solution also takes many subjective liberties with interpretation of the plaintext, such as “PAOL” meaning “PAUL”, “PRISIDIO” meaning “PRESIDIO”, “D” representing “THE”, “LRD OF SIC” translating to “LORD OF SICK”, “KILLD” meaning “KILLED”, and “AM PSIKO” meaning “AM PSYCHO”. Similar liberties are also taken by other discredited solutions, such as Graysmith’s famous solution. Another common quality of these solutions is that the plaintext resembles a kind of halting language resembling “baby talk”. The reason for this is because shorter phrases are much easier to produce via anagramming than longer ones. And this forces unrelated and non-sequitor phrases to appear next to each other.
The Zodiac killer very likely did something unusual, or even insane, to the 340 cipher text to make it resist attack all these years. But we still need to use sanity to discover which insane method he might have used. Could he have used this kind of anagramming technique when writing up his plaintext? I believe it is unlikely, but possible. But if he did, it will be nearly impossible to prove it, because so many alternative solutions can be generated with the same technique.
As per Copyright and Intellectual Property Disclaimer stated at Zodiac 340 character cryptogram solution proposal by Ozcan Turkmen
1) Request prior written permission to publish any material from site.
2) Following the granted permission, either show ALL material provided by the author, or please DELETE your thread which is lacking even a link.
3) Following the granted permission, give the solution as a whole (with all anagrams and non-anagram parts). So that people can see clearly whether it is a half anagram solution or something else as you claimed it to be.
4) Following the granted permission, provide a link to the solution proposal page.
It is bad faith not to provide the readers with those links and materials.
You must not have read this article, because I very clearly linked to your materials.
Joking? I don’t see your link to http://www.workmanofchild.com/eng/essays/zodiac-cipher-solution.html
How do you think the readers are going to understand without seeing the solution in full? They will read the Turkish newspaper?
Funny!
Plus, you are not allowed the publish the solution image (only) without other material, and without permission.
You are misleading people. Present the solution in full first.
The text clearly links to your solution in full. I don’t know what else to tell you. I am not misleading people, because the link clearly takes people to your site. Did you bother to check that the solution image was a hyperlink before making your accusations?
This is not a clear link, even I have missed it.
Plus, did you get my permission to publish that image? You seem to totally ignore copyright and intellectual property disclaimers.
You don’t have the required respect to one’s efforts. So I’m requesting you to delete this, because it’s all understood.
I can sense your “good intentions” (!) from miles away.
You selected only the parts of solution you consider “weak” – this is bad faith, and this is not fair. Show it all, and people will see what is going on here. Moreover, clearly state that you “are not able to prove that an anagram solution does not exist” whatever you think or believe. Remember the last 18 characters left in 408 cryptogram? Do you really think they are meaningless fillers?!!! “Overuse of anagrams” – this is not even a comment, it’s a lie! The solution is only half-anagram, and most of the anagrams are simple, self-evident anagrams. Even a child can decode those parts : PAMSTS – STAMPS, WOREID, LEOPEP, etc. Besides the straight plaintext parts, this is the strongest part of the solution. But you managed to put it as a weakness, eh?? Gosh! For ambiguous parts, I clearly asked suggestion from the audience, stating that my solution is “almost complete”. So you’d better learn to respect and enjoy the achievements imho.
I won’t post any more single word to this page, cause I don’t have time for this and I can see your intentions very well. You are doing the same all the time. What a pity! But I’ll have an eye on this thread to check whether legal issues are observed/corrected or not. Bye.
I went ahead and replaced the image of your solution with a typed up version. It’s odd to me that you claim to have uncovered the killer’s words, yet stake a copyright claim on them.
“The solution is only half-anagram” That is still too much. The 420 possible words in my example weren’t enough? Consider these 2,000 words that can be found in “fslkikhaigiitrmrloandllaoirom” (for which you only provide one interpretation):

Have you ruled out those possibilities? If so, what were your criteria?
“I went ahead and replaced the image of your solution with a typed up version.”
Stop playing around, you know that it’s not enough and it needs to be a clear link to the page (such as your link to Turkish newspaper). You strictly need my written permission to put my copyrighted material which are published both on web and the newspaper. And as it comes to how odd it is – I invite you to read more about copyright and intellectual property rights. The worst part is that you take a piece of information (more correctly, piece of someone else’s work) without the permission of the author, and then use it as “disinformation”. Hard to believe that you are that desperate! But since you don’t seem to understand you’d better expect a law suit from me, and very soon. I won’t let you treat my work that way. You have been warned.
I’m convinced that you are in a mood desperate enough to not (willing to) understand even what you read. You may have lots of time to waste , but I don’t have it. So I won’t bother talking to you anymore. just a lawsuit is enough.
Use your time in a creative and positive way – if you can. BYE.
Your dissatisfaction with my analysis has blinded you to reasonable criticisms of your public claims. So, you resort to attack. Good luck with that.
analysis? reasonable criticism?
don’t make me laugh oranchak. you cannot hide behind these, ’cause those aren’t that cheap.
your bad faith is clear enough by your insistence/resistence whereas I showed my disapproval as the author and you have been warned. you go your own way, and I go mine. this is not going to be a second starliper case for you.
Do you ever write anything negative about the art you criticize? Maybe those artists should subject you to lawsuits.
you know why this never happens to me? because I have respect to the artists and to their works. I always put their positive accomplishments together with their weak parts.
this is a solution “proposal” only , and it may have weaker parts (I left those parts open – didn’t you realize my question marks? didn’t you read that I wrote “suggestions are welcome”?). but still you are ignoring the possible achievements, you don’t say a single word about them, and you directly start to attack. I really don’t understand why do you behave as if I have claimed to have solved it in full. no, this is a puzzle we can completely solve by collaboration only.
I can do nothing for you if you are not ready to accept a solution proposal that consists partly – or completely – of anagrams. sorry for not being able to please you, but that’s exactly what I think the cipher maker did. and what if this is the real case? aren’t we able to make a distinction between a better anagram solution and a really bad one? I don’t think so. think about it.
Good article. Keep up the good work, Oranchak.
Good work? Well ok, but we didn’t see any solution proposal provided by Oranchak yet.
If this is really some professional “reasonable criticism”
1) Oranchak has to prove that an anagram solution for Zodiac 340 cryptogram does not exist. Thoughts or beliefs or prejudices are not enough. How could one claim that a solution proposal is overusing anagrams, where he does not know how the cipher is actually made? What if anagrams are “overused” (?) by Zodiac himself in 340 cryptogram to make it that difficult to solve?? Unless Doranchak provide us with clear and scientific evidence that this cipher has nothing to do with overuse of anagrams, his claim will remain an empty accusition, and an unfair, desperate attack against such solution proposals.
2) Doranchak is free to take any “subjective liberties” and software tools to provide us with a complete cipher key and a half-anagram solution comparable to mine :
AHLT (HALT) IDIOT PAOL RIOPDISI (PRISIDIO) KILLING.
AORDLIDKNMSFCIN (LRD OF SIC MANKIND?) KLLDI (KILLD) ALL

I’d be really happy to see Doranchak doing his home work and provide us with such a proposal.
This could be a real contribution, unfortunately it needs the same amount of work as mine, I’m afraid.
Throwing a solution proposal away is not that cheap. Criticism needs much more effort and respect.
This is why I not accept Doranchak’s prejudice as a critique. He is not doing his home work.
P.S: I will ignore all comments which are real “work”s regarding two items listed above.
Have a nice day all! Keep in mind that Z-340 is a puzzle we can completely solve by positive communication and collaborative efforts only.
Ooops P.S should be
P.S: I will ignore all comments which are NOT real “work”s in the sense of the two items listed above.
This doesn’t change the fact that your solution has severe problems.
That is called “proving the negative.” For example, prove to me that a teapot is not orbiting the sun somewhere in our solar system. Can’t prove me wrong? Therefore, I might be correct.
But in science, you can only test things that are falsifiable. Otherwise we can make claims all day long about anything we want.
What I have tested is this falsifiable statement: Turkmen’s solution is a unique and unambiguous partial solution to the 340 cipher. And I’ve already demonstrated that the presence of anagrams makes the solution non-unique and very ambiguous. So, even if you think your solution is the correct one among the numerous alternative solutions, you still need more evidence.
I accept that it is possible Zodiac may have used anagrams in his cipher, just as it is possible he may have done numerous other things to make the cipher unsolvable all these years. But if you claim something specific about his technique, you have to prove it, which you haven’t done yet.
I suggest you review some of the existing solution proposals here: http://zodiackillerciphers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page#Discredited_or_inconclusive_solution_attempts. Especially the ones by Jonas, Robert Graysmith, Harold Kravcik, AuthUser, Pax, and dronjom. All of those solutions use techniques that produce non-unique and ambiguous partial solutions. You have yet to prove that their techniques, too, were not employed by the Zodiac.
Here’s another example of a solution that produces very many interesting words and phrases, similarly surrounded by gibberish: http://www.zodiackillerfacts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=24906#p24906 It contains Zodiac-related words and phrases like “Toschi the cop”, “forced”, “cabbie”, “presidio heigts”, etc. You could apply anagrams to the ambiguous sections and produce very many interesting solutions.
You desire collaboration but are unable to accept criticism backed by facts. Doesn’t sound very collaborative to me.
But in science, you can only test things that are falsifiable.
Oh, I’m glad you read some Karl Popper. Impressive. I could also talk about the strong Goldbach conjecture which is not provable probably because of Godel’s Incompleteness, but I find it unnecessary in this context. We are talking about a solution proposal to an unsolved cryptogram, the solution of which might be neither provable nor falsifiable. Cause I have a hunch that if it were something of that kind, it would likely have been cracked so far, over 40 years. Maybe we will have to chose the most sensible solution proposal(s) in the end – who knows?
I accept that it is possible Zodiac may have used anagrams in his cipher
So is there any point to especially label my proposal with “anagram overuse”? You act as if you know the solution. If you don’t know it, or if you are not able to prove the contrary, there is no point to call my proposal “weak” because of this. It’s nonsense. You just “believe” that the solution has to be something of different kind. And you do your “criticism” (!) based on those “beliefs”. This is not fair. You should rather present the solution in a “neutral” way in that case. This would be more honest.
unique and unambiguous partial solution
How you come to the idea there has to be a provable, unique, and unambiguous solution for Z-340? I suspect the existence of such a solution, and I make no claims about it. We are not talking about Z-408 which is solved within a week. Rather I believe in “contributions” and sensible proposals. People will choose the most sensible one(s) in the long-term, and that’s all.
It contains Zodiac-related words and phrases like “Toschi the cop”, “forced”, “cabbie”, “presidio heigts”, etc. You could apply anagrams to the ambiguous sections and produce very many interesting solutions.
I think I already encouraged you to do this. No? Try, and publish a result. I would enjoy it. Alternatives are good.
are unable to accept criticism backed by facts
I have no problem with criticism. I’m just trying to show the pointlessness of your negative comments. You are talking about “anagram overuse”, but you don’t have a basis or evidence for a solution that does not use or “overuse” anagrams . You are talking about proposal’s many possible alternatives, and you state it as a weakness, whereas I don’t claim uniqueness, and you cannot prove that the cipher has a scientificly verifiable unique solution. You just “speculate” that it has to be. So how could your negative “criticism” can be serious or fair under these circumstances? What is the point, the meaning of your criticism? Wouldn’t you suspect bad intentions if someone wouldn’t present your work neutrally only because of his beliefs? If you are only trying to tell the people they should rather continue trying to solve the cipher in case they feel like that – it’s Ok. But you have no point to degrade the proposal. Just put it in your repository -if you want -, and continue working on the cipher. If you would have been neutral (that is honest) and respectful from the beginning as a real critic should be, I wouldn’t write a single word of comment. Let’s not waste our time like this. Either someone will find your provable, unique solution or – as I believe – people will have to choose the proposal(s) which they feel make some sense. Actually talk is not much needed here, what matters are the proposals competing with each other to gain public consensus over time – time which is the one and only judge in most cases.
OK, so we agree on the basic facts about your solution attempt. Good. Now, since there are so many unprovable solutions to pick from, let’s pick the solution that is most sensible. What are your criteria?
I think you are still assuming (or believing in) the existence of a strictly mathematically/statistically verifiable/provable solution while asking this. Since I do not share that assumption with you, I’d prefer keep working on the proposal (and other stuff) rather than getting into the discussion of verification criteria. I wish it would, but I’m afraid there’ll likely be no such verifiable solution for Z-340 as it happily existed for Z-408. So I present my proposal to public, and leave the rest to time. I wouldn’t mind if they won’t favor my proposal, as long as I’m sure that I had been honest with my work and did the best I can. But don’t worry, thanks to their judgement and reasoning abilities, and intuitions which are not limited with mathematical certainty, people are (and will be) able somehow to pick the most sensible one(s) where a strictly verifiable solution is absent. It resembles the ability to find your way in the dark.
I hope to find some time to check this thread again, but I’m afraid I’ll be too busy writing my other stuff. E-mail communication might be slower, but I’d like you to know that it is open. Thanks after all.
Ozcan.

Good article, Oranchak. I would like to believe Ozcan’s solution, in whole or in part, but he is making himself out to be a nut in the comments section. I have a tough time believing a person who behaves as such on the internet.
Just my 2 cents.
